Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how the Live Caption Translator Chrome extension (“the extension”, “we”, or “our”) handles information when you use it. This policy applies only to Live Caption Translator and not to any other products.
1. Summary
The extension provides real-time captions and translation from tab audio or your microphone. It processes audio and text needed for that purpose. API keys and settings are stored in your browser. Audio and related text are sent only to the speech/AI provider you choose. The published extension does not send your audio, transcripts, or API keys to developer-operated servers.
2. Information we process
Depending on how you use the extension, it may process:
- API keys you enter for OpenAI, Google Gemini, Groq, and/or QwenCloud — stored in Chrome local storage on your device for your use with the selected provider.
- Settings and preferences such as provider choice, languages, overlay appearance, and related options — stored in Chrome storage (local and/or sync for non-secret preferences).
- Audio from the browser tab you choose to caption, or from your microphone when you enable microphone captioning — streamed or uploaded only to the selected provider’s API for transcription and/or translation.
- Captions and translations returned by those providers — shown in the on-page overlay; optionally saved as a local transcript file if you enable session export when you stop.
The extension does not ask for your name, email address, or account password. It does not include advertising or analytics SDKs that profile you across sites.
3. How we use information
- To transcribe and translate audio and display live captions.
- To remember your keys and preferences between sessions.
- To optionally export a session transcript file you choose to download.
We do not sell user data. We do not use extension data for advertising.
4. Third-party services
When you start captioning, audio and/or text required for the feature are sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS or WSS) to the provider you selected:
- OpenAI (privacy policy)
- Google Gemini / Google AI (privacy policy)
- Groq (privacy policy)
- QwenCloud / Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (see the provider’s published privacy terms for the region you use)
Those providers process data under their own terms and policies. You supply your own API key; usage is subject to that provider’s billing and data practices.
5. Data storage and retention
- API keys are stored in
chrome.storage.localon your device (not in Chrome sync). - Non-secret settings may use Chrome sync storage so preferences can follow your browser profile.
- Overlay captions exist in memory during a session unless you export them.
- Exported transcript files are saved only if you enable download; they remain under your control on your device.
- The developer does not operate a cloud database of your captions or keys for the published extension.
6. Permissions (why they are needed)
- tabCapture / offscreen — capture tab audio for captioning.
- activeTab / scripting — inject the caption overlay after you start.
- storage — save keys and settings.
- downloads — optional session transcript export.
- power — optional keep-awake during a session.
- declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess — attach your Qwen auth header on the extension’s own WebSocket requests to the Qwen endpoint (browser WebSockets cannot set Authorization directly).
- Host permissions — limited to the selected providers’ API endpoints listed in the extension manifest.
7. Your choices
- Remove or change API keys in the extension’s Keys tab at any time.
- Clear extension data via Chrome’s extension details → clear storage, or by removing the extension.
- Stop captioning to end audio processing for that session.
- Disable or uninstall the extension to stop all processing.
8. Children’s privacy
The extension is not directed at children under 13. Do not use it to submit children’s personal information.
9. Changes
We may update this policy when the product’s data practices change. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
